CM Omar Abdullah Pushes for Better Rail Services in J&K, Seeks Vande Bharat Stop at Anantnag

SRINAGAR, JUNE 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday called for strengthening railway connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir during a meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi, urging the Centre to introduce a halt for the Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag and enhance train services during the scheduled closure of Srinagar International Airport in October.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister lauded the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, describing it as a transformative step that has considerably improved travel convenience and connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. He appreciated the train’s punctuality, passenger-friendly facilities and quality of service.

Emphasising the increasing demand for improved rail accessibility, Omar Abdullah requested the Railway Minister to consider a stoppage of the Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag, saying it would greatly benefit people from South Kashmir and neighbouring areas.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the proposed closure of Srinagar International Airport from October 1 to October 15, 2026, due to runway maintenance and resurfacing works. He pointed out that the period coincides with the peak tourist season and could impact the movement of tourists, pilgrims and local commuters.

Keeping in view the likely disruption in air travel, Omar Abdullah urged the Railway Ministry to increase the frequency of Vande Bharat services to and from the Valley during the airport shutdown period to accommodate the expected rise in passenger traffic.

He said enhanced rail connectivity would serve as a reliable alternative to air travel, ensuring hassle-free movement of passengers while safeguarding tourism and economic activities in the region.

The Chief Minister further noted that improved train services during the period would also facilitate travel during the festive season, including the Durga Puja holidays, besides meeting the requirements of local residents and pilgrims.

Notably, on April 30 this year, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other dignitaries, flagged off the Vande Bharat Express service between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, marking the first direct rail connection between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.
