Waqf Board Considers Rebuilding Main Khanqah at Charar-e-Sharief After Stakeholder Consultations

Concerns have reportedly been raised over its safety and structural stability, with experts suggesting that the existing building may no longer be suitable for long-term preservation.

Srinagar, June 4: The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board is reportedly considering the reconstruction of the main Khanqah at Charar-e-Sharief in consultation with religious scholars, local stakeholders, and heritage experts.

The proposed move is being viewed as a significant step towards preserving one of Kashmir’s most revered spiritual and cultural landmarks. The Khanqah, associated with the revered Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, holds immense religious and historical importance and attracts thousands of devotees every year.

The original shrine was destroyed in a devastating fire in 1995 during the siege that engulfed the historic town. Although the structure was subsequently rebuilt, concerns have reportedly been raised over its safety and structural stability, with experts suggesting that the existing building may no longer be suitable for long-term preservation.

Sources said the Waqf Board is exploring the possibility of reconstructing the main Khanqah while ensuring that the shrine’s traditional architectural character and spiritual significance are preserved. Any final decision is expected to be taken after extensive consultations with all stakeholders.

If approved, the project would mark a historic effort to safeguard an important symbol of Kashmir’s religious heritage for future generations while ensuring the safety and convenience of devotees visiting the shrine.
