Congress Likely to Field Ghulam Ahmad Mir for Rajya Sabha Seat

Final call to be taken by party high command: Tariq Karra

Srinagar, Sep 25 : The Congress is likely to field senior leader and MLA from Dooru, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled on October 24, sources told Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

J&K Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra said the final decision rests with the party leadership in New Delhi. “The matter will be discussed with the high command, and they will examine all aspects before taking a final call,” Karra told local news gathering agency.

The NC-Congress alliance is expected to comfortably secure three of the four Rajya Sabha seats. With six MLAs in J&K, Congress is expected to seek one of the “safe” seats.

Sources said Mir is the front-runner. He has held key organizational responsibilities at the national level. Appointed general secretary in charge of Jharkhand in December 2023, he currently oversees West Bengal for the party. Under his watch, Congress secured 16 assembly and two Lok Sabha seats in Jharkhand.

Party insiders also indicated that there is discussion about fielding a senior leader from Jammu, once a Congress stronghold but a region where the party has not won an assembly or Lok Sabha seat since 2014.
