Srinagar, Dec 05: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) president Farooq Abdullah on Friday said that people, including party workers, were questioning the performance of the government after one year, but stated that many key powers continue to remain with the Lieutenant Governor.
“How much can be done in a single year when so many powers lie with the Lieutenant Governor?” Farooq asked while addressing party workers at Naseem Bagh in Hazratbal after paying tributes to his father and JKNC founder Sheikh Abdullah.
Urging party members to avoid internal differences, the veteran leader asked them to focus on strengthening the organisation ahead of the upcoming elections. He cautioned against frequent public statements by party functionaries, saying they were harming the party’s image.
“Do not only give statements. Strengthen the party. Everyone is making statements, but no one is identifying the real issues. Make the party stronger,” he said, according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).
He warned that political rivals would continue to create obstacles but emphasized the need for unity within the ranks. “Your opponent will create difficulties for you, but you must not be afraid. You have to remain united,” he said.
Referring to reports of internal discussions on party positions, he expressed concern over what he described as “secret conversations” about future posts. “This is not good for the party,” he cautioned.
On the performance of the National Conference–led government in its first year, he reiterated that many administrative responsibilities still rest with the office of the Lieutenant Governor. (KINS)
