Jammu, Mar 12: National Conference (NC) president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said he initially mistook the gunshot fired during a wedding function in Jammu for a firecracker, stating that his security personnel acted promptly and averted any serious incident.
Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Dr Abdullah, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, said the incident occurred when he was leaving the wedding venue after attending the function.
“I had gone to attend a wedding. When the bride arrived, we took permission and left for home. As I came out of the hall, I heard a loud sound and thought it was a firecracker, as such things often happen at weddings,” he said.
He said he was later informed that a man had fired from a pistol. “My security guards immediately intervened and tried to pull his hand from behind, which destabilised him and the pistol went upwards. They then managed to seize the weapon,” he said.
Dr Abdullah said he had no idea about the identity or motive of the accused. “I don’t know this man at all and I have never wronged anyone. I don’t understand what his purpose was or what grudge he had,” he added.
He also appreciated the quick response of his security personnel and thanked God that no harm was caused. “I am thankful to Allah that my security team was there and acted in time. Because of them I am safe,” he said. (KNC)
