Iran has denied the killing, with semi-official media saying he is “steadfast” in commanding the field.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei has been martyred, US President Donald Trump announced early on Sunday. Khamenei led Iran from 1989, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. A former president during the Iran-Iraq War, he survived an assassination attempt in 1981. As Supreme Leader, he held ultimate authority over Iran’s armed forces and foreign policy, shaping a confrontational stance towards Israel and overseeing the country’s disputed nuclear programme.
