Srinagar: An elderly woman was found murdered inside her residential house at Mir Bagh, Nowshera on the outskirts of Srinagar on Thursday, triggering shock and panic in the locality, officials said.
The deceased who was taken to SKIMS immediately, has been identified as Rashida Begum, wife of Lateef Ahmad Gangoo, an inhabitant of Mir Bagh, aged around 65 years. Officials said her body was found with her throat slit inside the house.
Upon receiving information, a police team from Police Station Soura rushed to the spot and took control of the scene. The body was taken into custody and later shifted to SKIMS Soura for medico legal formalities.
Family sources revealed that a domestic servant, identified as Gorab Malakar, son of Paritosh Malakar, a non local from Assam, who was working at the victim’s residence, is suspected to have committed the murder. He fled from the spot soon after the incident.
Family sources said the suspect was later arrested from the Qazigund area of south Kashmir following a manhunt. Family sources alleged that the suspect may have killed the woman and looted gold ornaments from the house, though officials said the motive is still being investigated.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances and motive behind the crime. [KNT]
