Transformers burn due to overloading, CM Omar Abdullah

Urges consumers to declare actual power load

Srinagar Dec 13: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday appealed to electricity consumers to honestly declare their actual power load, stating that transformers are getting damaged primarily due to overloading caused by misuse of electricity.

“Show the load genuinely—how much electricity you actually consume. I promise no transformer will develop a fault,” Omar Abdullah told reporters in Gulmarg, according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

He said that many consumers obtain connections for a minimal sanctioned load but later use multiple high-power appliances.

He pointed out that people often apply for electricity connections citing usage of four bulbs, but in reality operate several heaters and other heavy appliances. “Obviously, transformers will burn when there is such a massive mismatch between sanctioned load and actual consumption,” the Chief Minister said.

Omar Abdullah stated that if consumers honestly disclose their real electricity requirements and get their load sanctioned accordingly, incidents of transformer burnouts can be largely avoided. “If people show the exact load, the problem of transformers burning will not take place,” he added.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid frequent complaints of transformer failures during peak winter months, when electricity demand surges due to extensive use of heating appliances. He urged public cooperation to ensure a stable and reliable power supply, especially during high-demand periods. (KINS)
