Society Gravely Affected by the Menace of Liquor and Drugs; Urban and Rural Areas in a State of Distress: Allama Hami

A Compassionate Appeal to All Political Parties and Legislative Members to Fulfil Their Moral and Humanitarian Duty.

In a democratic system, the electorate entrusts governance to a particular political party based on its commitment to addressing key societal concerns and developmental goals. The people repose their confidence in a government with the hope that it will alleviate social problems and work towards building a morally upright and progressive society. In accordance with this principle, the people of Jammu and Kashmir elected the present government last year. Among the foremost public concerns is the complete prohibition of immoral practices such as liquor consumption and drug abuse — an objective that no person of conscience can oppose. It is therefore the moral and administrative obligation of the government to address these pressing issues at the earliest and fulfill the aspirations of the people.

These observations were made by Allama Dr. Ghulam Rasool Hami, President of Karwani Islami International, during his Friday address at the Central Jamia Masjid, Arizal Khan Sahib, attended by thousands of people. Citing the widespread unrest caused by the growing prevalence of drugs and alcohol across the Valley, Allama Hami made it unequivocally clear that the government cannot absolve itself of responsibility in this matter. He stated that people throughout the region are anxiously waiting for the government to introduce concrete and effective legal measures to curb the use of drugs and liquor. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Allama Hami pointed out that numerous towns and villages have already fallen prey to the destructive grip of addiction. If decisive legislative action is not taken immediately, society as a whole will face severe repercussions — with the youth being the most adversely affected segment. Allama Hami further emphasized that it is the moral and humanitarian responsibility of all political representatives to cooperate with the government in finding a sustainable solution to this crisis and to exert collective pressure to ensure the swift enactment of stringent laws aimed at eradicating this social evil.
