Srinagar, Oct 20: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has admitted a Private Member’s Resolution moved by MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz seeking a one-time exemption of all outstanding electricity tariff dues for domestic consumers across the Union Territory.
As per an official communication issued by the Legislative Assembly Secretariat under No. LA:4460/Legn/2025 and dated October 20, 2025, the Hon’ble Speaker has admitted the resolution under Rule 179 read with Rule 28 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business.
The resolution titled “One Time Exemption of all outstanding dues on account of electric tariff to domestic consumers” aims to provide relief to thousands of households struggling with accumulated power dues. The proposal seeks to waive off the pending bills in a single exemption, potentially offering major respite to low-income families hit by financial constraints.
Sources in the Assembly Secretariat said the balloting process for Private Members’ Resolutions will take place on Wednesday in the Office Chambers of the Secretary Assembly. Legislators whose resolutions are admitted through balloting will subsequently be given an opportunity to move them formally in the House for discussion and voting.
The issue of unpaid power dues has long been a point of contention between consumers and the Power Development Department, with locals frequently demanding concessions or write-offs in view of erratic supply and mounting bills.
The upcoming ballot on October 22 will determine whether the resolution gets listed for detailed discussion in the forthcoming Assembly session. [KNT]
