Farooq Abdullah Invokes Islam Amid Allegations of Cross-Voting in Rajya Sabha Polls

Srinagar, Oct 25: National Conference (NC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Saturday broke his silence over the controversy surrounding the recent Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, invoking Islamic references while rejecting allegations of cross-voting by NC legislators.

Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said that even Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had faced false accusations, asserting that the National Conference remains united and its legislators voted solely for the party’s candidates. “Prophet Muhammad himself faced accusations. So, who are we not to be accused? We are clear in our conscience that our legislators voted for our own party nominees,” Abdullah remarked.

The clarification comes amid intense political speculation and social media chatter following the Rajya Sabha results, which saw the National Conference secure three seats while the BJP managed to win one. Opposition parties had hinted at possible cross-voting and alleged a secret understanding between the NC and the BJP.

Abdullah, however, dismissed such suggestions, calling them “baseless narratives aimed at discrediting the party’s democratic process.” He added that the NC’s success was the outcome of discipline and unity among its legislators. “We have worked hard to uphold the trust of our people and our party members. The results speak for themselves,” he said.

A senior NC leader also clarified that the voting pattern was fully transparent and in accordance with party directions. “Every legislator acted responsibly. The allegations are politically motivated and hold no ground,” the leader stated. [KNT]
