Exclusive Interview With Aga Syed Mehmood

Aga Syed Mehmood is prominent National Conference Leader and Party Candidate for upcoming bypolls in Budgam Assembly Constituency.

In an interview he talks on diverse issues.

How is this contest different from the previous one?

Now the election contest is quite difficult in all parameters. When I contested back in 1996 from Beerwah, it was easier, and today the contest is keenly fought. The people enthusiasm in voting too has grown.

Why has Budgam remained backward despite being so close to capital city Srinagar?

The assertion is right. Budgam is very near to Srinagar but lacks in many parameters of progress, and it is because the overall nature of the people of Budgam is shy, and they do not protest or speak much. In fact, they do not protest for demands.

Would you be able to fulfill the demands of the people as we are in a Union Territory if elected?

Yes, I am determined to take the Budgam Assembly Constituency to a new age of development. Although we are in a Union Territory and the task is tough, but as they say, nothing is impossible. The Article 370 restoration fight is close to the party, but basic day-to-day governance issues like road widening and repairing, we can resolve.

How do you see the water issues of Budgam?

The water issue is the biggest issue faced by the people of Budgam, especially the contaminated water, and it would be my top priority to resolve this.

How do you see the brick kiln issue of Budgam?

The brick kiln menace is a big issue for Budgam, and it has given rise to air, water, and land pollution. People themselves are responsible, as they allowed the mushroom growth of such brick kilns, but once elected, it would be a priority to rein in these brick kilns.

How would you ensure Shia-Sunni unity in voting patterns?

Our family has a historic legacy of ensuring Shia-Sunni unity. My grandfather played a historic positive role in this regard. The Shia-Sunni card played in politics has heavily damaged the polity and development of Budgam, but now I am happy we have risen above sectarian differences to be one and united.

What is your message to the people of Budgam?

My message to the people of Budgam is to stay united, as unity is the first step towards progress. We will make Budgam great again. People should also ask questions to the respective representatives without fear.
