Says, People must Stay Hydrated, Maintain Good Diet; Avoid Self-Medication as It Is Harmful, Consult a Doctor When Needed
Srinagar, Jan 9: On the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China and several cases reported in India experts said that there is no need to panic as its cases are being reported from time to time.
India reported 8 cases so far, while officials said no case of HMPV Virus has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir.
Dr. Syed Mudasir Qadri, Additional Professor at the Department of Internal and Pulmonary Medicine, SKIMS, in an exclusive conversation with JKNS, stated that HMPV is similar to our common cold viruses. It is very close to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). There is nothing serious about it; it is a common virus that has already been present in our environment, and its cases are reported from time to time.
Dr. Qadri further explained that the symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of common cold viruses. These symptoms include nasal congestion, fever, body aches, and sometimes diarrhea, just like a regular cold.
This virus is mostly seen in children under 5 years of age and adults over 65 years. It particularly affects individuals who are immunocompromised or those on steroids. However, Dr. Qadri assured that it does not severely affect the lungs like the COVID-19 virus did. It primarily impacts the upper respiratory system.
Treatment for HMPV involves supportive care, including maintaining a good diet and staying properly hydrated. Dr. Qadri said that in Kashmir, viruses and flu are more common during the winter months due to the cold weather. As humidity decreases, the respiratory tract tends to dry out, making individuals more susceptible to viral infections.
Dr. Qadri urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that most of the cases are mild. He also stressed the importance of avoiding self-medication, as it is very harmful. If symptoms persist or worsen, he advised consulting a doctor.
It is important to mention that, China has reported surge in HMPV Cases which forced India for testing across all states. (JKNS)
