Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, has embarked on a press tour to warn about the potential unforeseen dangers posed by generative AI.

“We’re soon going to be able to have computers running on their own, deciding what they want to do,” the 69-year-old tech investor said in an interview on ABC’s ‘This Week’ programme. On the other hand, Schmidt also opined that every person was going to have the equivalent of a polymath in their pocket soon. He further suggested that it may be worth considering pulling the plug on AI systems when they start to “self-improve” and went on to say that it would be better to have somebody “with their hand on the plug.”

In another appearance on PBS, Schmidt talked about networks of AI-powered drones and how they could shape the future of warfare. He advocated for humans remaining in the loop in order to maintain “meaningful control” over such autonomous weapons.

“The correct model, and obviously war is horrific, is to have the people well behind and have the weapons well up front, and have them networked and controlled by AI,” Schmidt saidFor context, the Silicon Valley leader has developed a new company called White Stork that has sold AI-powered drones to Ukraine which is at war with Russia, according to a report by Gizmodo. Additionally, Schmidt is an investor in several AI startups and reportedly lobbies US lawmakers on AI regulation.
